Wiring for VOIP Services

To allow all phone outlets to be used for VOIP services, the following connection must be made:

  • Locate your phone "demarcation" unit. This usually exists on the outside of your home or inside in the basement area. Homes tend to have phone wires serially connected from outlet to outlet. The VOIP unit must connect to the main wire which feeds the rest of the residence. This will cause the existing outlets to become active.
  • The VOIP unit must also be connected to the "broadband" connection which is the Fiber Unit. Remember, this service works via the broadband and not the traditional phone lines.

To bypass all phone outlets and use a wireless base station, perform the following:
  • Another way to connect VOIP is with the use of wireless phones and a base station. In this case you would not use the phone outlets to connect phones. Your service would be served via the wireless phones connected to your broadband connection.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT plug your VOIP unit into a phone jack that is live with traditional phone services. This can cause damage to the VOIP unit and other equipment.
